The biggest mistakes I made on my blood sugar journey (so you don’t have to)

Balancing my blood sugar wasn’t a straightforward path. I made mistakes, learned lessons, and found out what truly works through trial and error. Here are some of the biggest mistakes I made and what you can learn from them:

  1. Only focusing on the numbers: When I first started, I was obsessed with my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) readings. I was consumed by macros—fats, proteins, and net carbs—while ignoring food quality and micronutrients. I ended up eating unhealthy fats, artificial sweeteners, and foods I was intolerant to because they didn’t spike my glucose. Spoiler alert: It didn’t work. I was chasing numbers instead of true health.

  2. Ignoring stress as a key factor: I was doing everything right—diet, movement, sleep, supplements—but still felt terrible. I was underestimating the impact of stress and dismissing the role my nervous system played in my physical health. Chronic stress and unresolved trauma were sabotaging my progress by keeping my body in a state of dysregulation.

  3. Falling for the 'exercise more, eat less' trap: I pushed my body too hard with HIIT workouts, marathon running, and restrictive diets. I ignored the toll this took on my nervous system, which only added to my stress load and eventually led to burnout.

  4. Copying others instead of listening to my body: I copied influencers and biohackers (many of whom were men) and ignored my own body’s signals. I wasn’t eating in alignment with my menstrual cycle or my body’s preferred rhythms, which made things worse.

  5. Being dogmatic about one approach: Whenever something worked temporarily, I stuck to it religiously—even when my body was telling me it wasn’t working anymore. I had to learn that what serves you well at one point in your life might not be what you need forever.

  6. Chasing quick fixes: Even though I knew better, I fell into the trap of looking for a magic pill or a quick hack. I wasted time, money, and hope on things that only provided temporary relief.
